Costa Rica Surf Report:
3-4ft Waist to chest high waves with fair to good shape.
Pavones, Costa Rica– Happy New Year!!! The waves were pretty good this morning, but there was a small crowd on it early.
I took photos and waited for the tide and crowd to drop a bit before paddling out. I wanted to enjoy the waves without competing for small surf with a group of frothing holiday travelers.
When I finally got out there, I caught some fun waves, as well as an earful from a tourist on a brand new Surftech longboard with the requisite Gopro camera to catch the moment, who felt compelled to lecture me on the finer points of his “Surf Etiquette” dogma. Simply because I paddled over a wave in front of him when he had “The right of way!”
Thanks, for the info, but my reply, I think, was a bit more educational, and should be understood by all surfers traveling or locals if we are
SURFING ETIQUETTE TIP OF THE DAY: “It is unreasonable to assume that no one will ever get in your way when surfing a crowded break. Get over it!! And you know what is REALLY RUDE? It’s paddling out at a surf break, then barking orders at people at the top of your voice while demanding YOUR rights.” I continued calmly though emphatically, “We don’t do that here. You are a visitor. Wake the fuck up!”
I then apologized for getting in his way, which wouldn’t have been an issue if he knew how to turn a surfboard. After that, I simply went about the business of enjoying to surf.
I try to employ the utmost respect for others in the water and patiently wait my turn to come around, not always successfully it seems.
People, we all need to calm down when we go on vacation, or when surfing in general. Don’t bring your stress and aggression with you when you paddle out, even if it is your Local break. It is unnecessary and counter productive to the fact that we are all sharing in this experience together whether we want to, or not, and we need to learn how to let go of our Ego sometimes. Learn to appreciate life as it unfolds rather than trying to impose our foolish notions about what we think we deserve from it.
